At the time of writing, the Italian Parliament is debating a new law that would make it legal to practice an unproven stem cell treatment in public hospitals. The treatment, offered by a private non‐medical organization, may not be safe, lacks a rationale, and violates current national laws and European regulations. This case raises multiple concerns, most prominently the urgent need to protect patients who are severely ill, exposed to significant risks, and vulnerable to exploitation. The scientific community must consider the context—social, financial, medical, legal—in which stem cell science is currently situated and the need for stringent regulation. Additional concerns are emerging. These emanate from the novel climate, created within science itself, and stem cell science in particular, by the currently prevailing model of ‘translational medicine’. Only rigorous science and rigorous regulation can ensure translation of science into effective therapies rather than into ineffective market products, and mark, at the same time, the sharp distinction between the striving for new therapies and the deceit of patients.  相似文献

Cadmium is an environmental pollutant of increasing worldwide concern. It has been reported to be high in the soil where food crops are grown in some parishes of Jamaica. Surprisingly, no adverse effect of cadmium has been reported among the Jamaican population. However, phytic acid has also been shown to be high in some food crops grown in Jamaica. In this study, we evaluated the effects of phytic acid (1 %) and exercise on the metabolism of cadmium (5 mg cadmium/kg body weight) in rats. Five groups of rats were fed as follows: rats fed control diet, control diet supplemented with cadmium and subjected to exercise, control diet supplemented with phytic acid plus cadmium and subjected to exercise, control diet supplemented with cadmium plus phytic acid, and control diet supplemented with cadmium only. The animals were fed for 4 weeks and then sacrificed. Blood samples were collected for some biochemical assays. Percentage weight loss (28.42 %) was greatest in the group that had cadmium supplement only. The group fed control diet supplemented with cadmium only displayed increased liver enzymes and electrolytes except for the significant decrease in bicarbonate compared to other test groups. Similarly, blood urea nitrogen and uric acid were increased in the group fed cadmium supplement only compared to other test groups. Total cholesterol trended downwards in the test groups compared to control. These observations suggest that consumption of diet high in phytic acid with relatively high physical activity may be protective against the adverse effects of cadmium.  相似文献

Differences in rhythmicity (relative variance in cycle period) among mammal, fish, and lizard feeding systems have been hypothesized to be associated with differences in their sensorimotor control systems. We tested this hypothesis by examining whether the locomotion of tachymetabolic tetrapods (birds and mammals) is more rhythmic than that of bradymetabolic tetrapods (lizards, alligators, turtles, salamanders). Species averages of intraindividual coefficients of variation in cycle period were compared while controlling for gait and substrate. Variance in locomotor cycle periods is significantly lower in tachymetabolic than in bradymetabolic animals for datasets that include treadmill locomotion, non‐treadmill locomotion, or both. When phylogenetic relationships are taken into account the pooled analyses remain significant, whereas the non‐treadmill and the treadmill analyses become nonsignificant. The co‐occurrence of relatively high rhythmicity in both feeding and locomotor systems of tachymetabolic tetrapods suggests that the anatomical substrate of rhythmicity is in the motor control system, not in the musculoskeletal components.  相似文献

Neuromechanics: an integrative approach for understanding motor control   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Neuromechanics seeks to understand how muscles, sense organs, motor pattern generators, and brain interact to produce coordinatedmovement, not only in complex terrain but also when confrontedwith unexpected perturbations. Applications of neuromechanicsinclude ameliorating human health problems (including prosthesisdesign and restoration of movement following brain or spinalcord injury), as well as the design, actuation and control ofmobile robots. In animals, coordinated movement emerges fromthe interplay among descending output from the central nervoussystem, sensory input from body and environment, muscle dynamics, and the emergent dynamics of the whole animal. The inevitablecoupling between neural information processing and the emergentmechanical behavior of animals is a central theme of neuromechanics.Fundamentally, motor control involves a series of transformationsof information, from brain and spinal cord to muscles to body, and back to brain. The control problem revolves around the specifictransfer functions that describe each transformation. The transferfunctions depend on the rules of organization and operationthat determine the dynamic behavior of each subsystem (i.e.,central processing, force generation, emergent dynamics, andsensory processing). In this review, we (1) consider the contributionsof muscles, (2) sensory processing, and (3) central networksto motor control, (4) provide examples to illustrate the interplayamong brain, muscles, sense organs and the environment in thecontrol of movement, and (5) describe advances in both roboticsand neuromechanics that have emerged from application of biologicalprinciples in robotic design. Taken together, these studiesdemonstrate that (1) intrinsic properties of muscle contributeto dynamic stability and control of movement, particularly immediatelyafter perturbations; (2) proprioceptive feedback reinforcesthese intrinsic self-stabilizing properties of muscle; (3) controlsystems must contend with inevitable time delays that can simplifyor complicate control; and (4) like most animals under a varietyof circumstances, some robots use a trial and error processto tune central feedforward control to emergent body dynamics.  相似文献
